If you're not affected you're not paying attention |
I'm Rach, this blog is about me and my life and getting back into all things creative. I graduated in 2009 with a BA in Fine Art This about me re-discovering my creative side. I would describe myself as a mixed media artist mainly focussing on collage. Follow me on twitter @RGaffected |
Richard Hugues You’ll be dead for years without even knowing it 2011
By far I think my favourite piece. The small metal pipe overhangs the mattress (which I think was made of fibreglass) which constantly dips water, pooling below. I always a fan of kinetic installations and the fact that it just seemed so out of place in a gallery setting. Grungy but beautiful!
Richard Hughes Chapel Perilous 2010
A kaleidoscopic sculpture consisting of six mirrored sections made up of windows and radiators adorned with teenage memorabilia. I was really drawn to this piece and spent a long time taking it all in. I particularly like the detail of mirroring, right down to the skateboard stickers and Mario toys!
Richard Hughes Blue Heaven 2010
This may look like an ordinary wall covered in blu tack (it may not even look like that with my awful photograph - apologies!). The installation actually consists of 300 individual pieces cast in bronze hand painted to resemble every day blu tack…dedication is not the word!
Various Richard Hughes including Repeat to fade 2013 transforming the traditional ‘white cube’ gallery space with peeling, ripped paint. Also, With the lights out 2012 a domestic lamp dressed in clothing.
Richard Hughes Sleeping Rust 2012
What first appears to be part of the architecture, on closer inspection are carefully placed rusty drainpipes, complete with bird’s nest. The pipes spell out the word ‘nowhere’ which, without being told requires a lot of staring and standing in the right position in order to see! It’s a lot more obvious looking at it through a camera lens!
A brilliant use of space and the wonderfully curved wall of the gallery.
Richard Wilson, 20:50 site specific oil installation 1987, used sump oil and steel
At first glance this would appear to be a room with a really shiny floor, in actual fact the floor is a large expanse of oil. I’ve always wanted to see this installation since I came across it during my degree. It didn’t disappoint! The heat and smell in the room add to the experience and you could stare into the depth of the darkness for ever. I over heard someone ask the steward how far down the oil goes, in which she replied, the artist didn’t give dimensions to add to the mystery - which I loved!
Bedwyr Williams, Walk a mile in my shoes, 2006
Installation with size 13 shoes, written notes, poster, shelving and foot rests
I loved this one, reminded me of myself and my struggles to accept my own big feet! The viewer is encouraged to try on each pair of the artists size 13 shoes, each accompanied with a note explaining the origin of said shoes. This reminded me of a piece I did in 2007 called Clown (see above).
Steve Bishop,Christian Dior - J’adore (Mountain Goat), 2008
Taxidermied goat, concrete, chalk
What can I say? Loved this piece, was in hysterics for a few minutes especially when I read the title! I’m really drawn towards it despite the taxidermy! The natural materials are great, both man-made in some way. Anything that takes a dig at glamorised perfume ads is always a win in my book.
Having previously missed the first Saatchi exhibition at Ipswich Art School I was determined not to miss this one. It is very exciting to have such a well known art collector in little ol’ Ipswich I was keen to see what we were getting and have to say I was not disappointed.
A fine array of oddities including a giant wagon-like sculpture made from vintage furniture and creepy creature costumes (scared me to say the least) were among the collection in Ipswich Art School. I have a few images of my favourites (apologies for the terrible camera phone pics!) which I thought I would share.
Revisitations is on from 23rd March - 26th August 2012. Worth having a look if you’re in the area!
